About Course

Electric cars used to be free to tax. Since 1 April 2025 most electric car owners pay vehicle tax like everyone else. This course explains, in plain English, what you pay depending on when your car was first registered, the extra charge for more expensive electric cars, and the government’s plan for a pay-per-mile charge from April 2028.

Tutwoo is an independent learning provider. This course gives general information based on GOV.UK guidance checked in November 2026. Tax rates change, usually each April, and planned changes may be altered before they become law. Always check GOV.UK for your own vehicle.
