Shift Handover & Safety-Critical Communication

About Course

Information lost between shifts has contributed to serious accidents, including Piper Alpha. Based on HSE human factors guidance, this course explains why handovers fail, the principles of an effective handover, how to identify higher-risk handovers, and how to make safety-critical communication reliable across shifts, teams and contractors.

This course gives general, awareness-level information about UK health and safety law and official guidance. It is not a substitute for employer-specific training, a suitable and sufficient risk assessment for your own workplace, or advice from a competent person, and it is not an accredited qualification. Always check the latest official guidance and follow your organisation’s own procedures.
