‘May Contain’ & ‘Free From’: Precautionary Allergen Labelling

Wishlist Share

About Course

‘May contain nuts’ and ‘free from milk’ statements matter enormously to people with food allergies – but only if they are used correctly. This course explains Food Standards Agency (FSA) guidance on precautionary allergen labelling (PAL), when it is and is not appropriate, specific wording, passing on supplier information, why PAL must never replace good allergen controls, and the rules for ‘free from’ and gluten-free claims.

This course provides general awareness of FSA guidance on allergen labelling. It does not replace your allergen risk assessment, technical advice or guidance from your local authority.

What Will You Learn?

  • Understand what precautionary allergen labelling is for Decide when PAL is justified using a cross-contamination risk assessment Use specific, honest wording and pass on supplier PAL information Avoid misleading combinations such as ‘free from’ plus ‘may contain’
