Giving Employment References

About Course

References can help or harm a former employee’s career, and a careless one can expose your organisation to legal claims. This course explains when you must give a reference, what you can and cannot say, how discrimination and data protection law apply, and how to request and use references fairly when recruiting. It applies across the UK.

Tutwoo is an independent learning provider. This course gives general information about employment references in the UK, checked against Acas guidance and published legal commentary in October 2026. It is not legal advice.
