Freight Containers: Fumigants, Off-Gassing & Safe Opening

About Course

Shipping containers can arrive holding toxic fumigants, chemicals released by the cargo during transit, or air with too little oxygen. This course explains where these hazards come from, why a missing fumigation label is no guarantee of safety, and the safe system HSE describes for opening, testing, ventilating and unloading containers, as well as load shift and structural risks.

This course gives general awareness of hazards when opening and unloading freight containers. It does not qualify anyone to test atmospheres or issue gas-free certificates. Always follow your site’s risk assessment, confined space procedures and current HSE or HSENI guidance.
