Comparing Data Sets: Averages & Spread

About Course

Exam questions often ask you to “compare the distributions” of two sets of data – and many marks are lost by giving numbers without interpreting them. This course shows you how to choose an average and a measure of spread, compare them in context, and write clear two-part comparisons for lists, tables, box plots and graphs.

What Will You Learn?

  • Choose a suitable average (mean, median or mode) and measure of spread (range or interquartile range)
  • Make two clear comparisons – one about average, one about consistency – in the context of the question
  • Recognise when outliers make the median and IQR better choices
  • Compare data shown in tables, box plots and charts
